The production of rubber-modified asphalt from tires by wet and dry processes are an alternative to recycle this type of waste, which has not been well managed in Colombia, representing a dramatic environmental problem. This is evidenced by the 958,500 tires that ended up on the streets, garbage, and landfills in the streets during 2020. Although many studies have been carried out on the improvements in properties that occur when incorporating rubber into asphalt, a sustainability study has not been developed, specifically comparing the two typical methods to prepare rubber asphalts. Therefore, this work evaluated, by means a logic procedure which starts from mass and energy balances, included analytical hierarchical procedure and normalization of each one of the Triple bottom line of sustainability index, to determine the sustainability of both processes to produce asphalt mixtures. It was found that, in the early stages of design, the wet method is more sustainable. Through sensitivity analysis, it was determined that it is more viable to produce asphalt-rubber by wet method with 15% GCR (recycled rubber grain) compared to the asphalt binder. This confirmed that it is a sustainable process and that, when compared to the production of conventional asphalt, it results in lower emissions and lower effects on human health.
