Sustainable groundwater remediation is one of the most important issues to ensure as well in future sufficient groundwater resources for drinking water supply. Mainly, contaminated source zones with mobile contaminants like chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC) limit a good groundwater quality. To remove contaminated source zones efficiently, in-situ thermal remediation is one of the most adequate methods, especially beneath buildings and in terms of brief time frames. Base on a project data, the cost and energy saving opportunities of in-situ thermal remediation (ISTR) in opposite to pump and treat (P&T) or soil vapour extraction (SVE) are illustrated. Furthermore, the impacts on groundwater quality after contaminant source zone removal are discussed.
