Abstract

R. Moses Almosnino’s Tratadodel Estrolabio (Treatise on the Astrolabe, 1560) is found in original Judeo-Spanish manuscript preserved in St. Petersburg, TheNational Library of Russia, MS Firkovich Evr II A 161/7A and its Hebrew translations in two copies, in St. Petersburg, TheNational Library of Russia, MS Firkovich Evr II A 15 and in the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts at RAN, MS B 446/5. As the author of this publication determined elsewhere, Almosnino in this treatise followed in the major lines The Treatise on the Use of the Astrolabe by the Andalusian Arab astronomer Ibn al-?affa?r in Hebrew translation of Jacob ben Machir Ibn Tibbon. However one chapter from the 40 found in Almosnino’s Tratado, does not conform to the corresponding chapter in the treatise of Ibn al-?affa?r. It treats in detail the computation of the Julian calendar with the application of the 28-year solar cycle. Almosnino provided a precise description of Julian calendar and the rules of purely mathematical computation without the use of Dominical letters. It is worth to appreciate the cleverness that went into the mathematical explanations of the base of the Julian calendar. We provide tables of the computation based on Almosnino’s rules.
